The Nervous System and Ayurveda- The Key to Emotional Balance

It is a no brainer that the nervous system control how you feel about yourself and the world around you. This complex web of information, structures and processes have an effect in all parts of your body. They contain the nerve cells called neurons,  characters of this web which interpret information translated into awareness of basically everything that one sees and feels.

In order to understand the ayurvedic view on the nervous system, it is helpful to take a little tour on the classic view of this physical and physiological communication network. The whole nervous system is divided into 2 categories- the central nervous system (CNS) which comprises the brain and the spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS)which involves everything else, meaning the periphery of the body. The peripheral nervous system is split into afferent and efferent nerves. Afferent nerves mean they transmit information to the brain and spinal cord (CNS) and efferent nerves transmit info away from the central nervous system. Those nerves that carry info away from the brain and spinal cord are divided into somatic nerves (send info to the skeletal muscles) and autonomic nerves (send info to the internal organs). This division goes even further when the autonomic nerves split into the sympathetic (increase metabolism and alertness) and parasympathetic divisions (conserves energy).

The science of Ayurveda refers to the nervous system as Majja dhatu. The channel carrying nutrients for the bone marrow and nerve tissue is called majja (bone marrow and nervous tissue), vaha (pathways) srotas(channels). The root for this channel is the central, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The opening or the “end” of this chain is the synaptic space.

Even though this is quite simplified, how can you maintain a healthy nervous system so your interpretation of info and your expression of those feelings is positive? The answer is through the prana or life force. How the doshas affect this majja tissue is the whole key for balance.
