Available scientific data support the conclusion that Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) is a real potent regenerative tonic (called Rasayana in Ayurveda). This root has the dual action of energizing while calming. It has pharmacological actions like anti-stress, neuroprotective, antitumor, anti arthritic, analgesic and anti inflammatory. It is bitter, astringent and sweet while it has a heating energy (virya). It is particularly effective on the reproductive, nervous and respiratory channels (srotas). Recommended dosage is 3-9 g per day as a dried root or 6-15ml per day (1:3) as a tincture. Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner near you to find out more if ashwagandha is right for you.
